Petting kitties in different cities

Petting kitties in different cities

Lauren Maher, C-IAYT, AMFT

I began traveling with my family as a young child, and I have been leading retreats since 2010. Travel has given me so much -- perspective, a greater sense of independence, personal transformation, long-lasting friendships, and moments of pure, simple joy. There is nothing quite like seeing the world with new eyes as you do when you travel. Whether it's tasting wine in Tuscany, snorkeling in Hawaii, or walking amongst ancient ruins in Greece, I am interested in finding those precious moments when time seems to stop and you are fully immersed in life itself.

In my work as a yoga teacher and therapist, I try to help people become "unstuck" in order to reach their highest potential. It's easy for any of us to get caught in a rut -- and in my experience, travel is one of the best ways to break out of our old routines and patterns. I am passionate about cultivating retreats that allow our guests to feel rejuvenated, inspired, and transformed.

When I finished college, I became obsessed with my future and building my career. The idea of traveling on my own was a far off idea, something I promised myself I would do one day after I had achieved all of my career and life goals. But when I got to my early 30s, I was still well short of those expectations. The career I thought I would have was still a long ways off.  Despite that, I left my cell phone and computer at home, jumped on an airplane, and went to see what the present looked like. For the next two months I woke up without a plan. I lived in the moment – literally. From where I ate to what I saw to where I slept. I met the most wonderful people. That trip was the most liberating experience of my life. It gave me a whole new perspective on how precious time is and reminded me that planning for a future was meaningless if I wasn’t living in the present. I have since realized there is plenty of time for both. My hope is that others will have a similar experience through Volare Retreats.
